Why a New Edition?

The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, is the daily prayer of the Church, offered around the clock by clergy, religious, and laypeople throughout the world. It is an ancient, structured way of praying Scripture throughout the day, focusing especially on the Psalms.

The current edition of Liturgy of the Hours was translated and designed in the 1970s, and few changes have been made since then. But upon the Vatican’s approval of a revised English translation which includes more accurate biblical texts and prayers, and new saint and feast celebrations added during the last fifty years, new editions will be required.

Word on Fire, widely acclaimed for bringing beauty and excellence to Catholic publishing, has been officially selected by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) as one of two publishers of the new Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition.

We aim to bring these sacred volumes to life with an unprecedented level of beauty, clarity, and craftsmanship.

This ambitious endeavor marks one of Word on Fire’s most significant publishing projects to date. Given Word on Fire’s commitment to Catholic social teaching and ethical business practices, we have intentionally chosen not to manufacture our books in the People's Republic of China, even if doing so might produce a less expensive volume. Word on Fire believes printing in China comes at too high a moral price as well. China’s government has a long and well-documented record of religious persecution, including the surveillance, harassment, and imprisonment of Catholic clergy and faithful. It also routinely violates basic human rights, including the rights to free speech, free worship, and dignified labor—rights upheld by Catholic social teaching. In solidarity with the persecuted Church and in fidelity to the dignity of the human person, we choose to partner with printers in countries that better align with our values.
